Russell's Standard Fashions 1915-1919
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1996)
Authors: Phillip Livoni, Calif.) Russell's Department Store (Pomona, Standard Fashion Company, and Phil Livoni
Average review score:

A great resource!
This is one of the books I reach for time and time again. The fashions are stylish but not out of the realm of possibility for the average woman of the time. I also love the narrow, four year time frame--the book really gives you a great overview of the move away from the fussier victorian styles to the more streamlined precusors of the 1920s tunics. I've gotten a lot of ideas for sewing out of this book and the illustrations are charming. Five stars overall!

Saltwater Fly-Fishing : From Maine to Texas
Published in Hardcover by Frank Amato Publications, Inc. (12 June, 2001)
Author: Don Phillips
Average review score:

Goodies from the guides
This book reminds of a sortlike book written by guide John Kumiski called "Flyfishing Florida salt". Various flyfishing locations from New England to Texas are listed in this book.

Each location has a separate chapter with an interview with the local guide about the fish, the flies and the tactics to use at that particular spot. Each chapter has tables which give you an indication when the best times for fishing for a particular species is and which flies the most effective ones are.

Although the chapters are relatively short they should give the visiting angler a pretty accurate indication of what he can expect at that location and what kind of gear he has to use. All of the flypatterns used by the guides are listed in the book but unfortunately only a few are pictured. There are several black and white photographs in this book as well as a few pages with colorphoto's by the guides. The quality of some of these pictures are not up the standard that I have seen in other books. Well, they are taken by guides so you really can't complain over that.

I guess the intention of this book was to cover the fishinglocations of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts very roughly. It is therefore very suitable to give you a broad idea of what the fishing is in all these places.

For really in-depth local information you will still have to get one of the local guidebooks for your next saltwater flyfishingtrip. Having said all this I must say that it is a very good book with a wealth of information that should be owned by everyone who likes to flyfish in saltwater.

Sea Edge
Published in Paperback by Walker and Co. (March, 1986)
Author: W. Phillip Keller
Average review score:

This book takes you there!
If you like the ocean and watching the waves continually roll, you'll like this book. This book took me there. The author's many descriptive words filled my mind with visions of some coastal shore. I saw sights and sounds as I explored and experienced the beach through Keller's written words. This is the first book I've read by him, but I assure you it won't be the last. Even though this is an out-of-print book, I shall search of a copy of my own.

Sea Edge
Published in Paperback by Word Publishing (April, 1988)
Author: Phillip W. Keller

One of his best.
This book gave me such a longing for the water. Not just the ocean but any lake I find now in awe!. The more of his books I read, the more I see God in the outdoors. However, the city gets more and more repulsive to me. Even food, I find that food from God is really the only way to eat. I think Mr. Kellers books are changing me into a whole person learning to walk with God and everything he has created. I recommmend this book to everyone. No one should go on a cruise without first reading this book. The wind, the rain, the snow, all of it that comes from the sky, I see differently now.

The Search for Meaning: Americans Talk About What They Believe and Why
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (January, 1993)
Author: Phillip L. Berman
Average review score:

Well balanced summary of what and why people believe.
I was born and raised in a safe non-denominational church environment, but faced many family problems at home. This paradoxical life I lived was terribly confusing for me, and at times emotionally frustrating. The first issue was my parents separation, which brought about questions of illegitimacy and existential angst. If I am an accident of nature, that why was I even born? What is my purpose in life? The second issue was my scientific and religious aspirations in church and school, which I had hoped would bring me to a greater understanding of our world: how it works? how did we get here? who we are? why we are here? and what our purpose in life is? In high school, I thought I had everything figured out. I was going to be a missionary doctor, and solve this worlds hunger and health problems. But after 2 years of study at the University of Toronto Science program and some practical missionary work in Croatia (1992), I decided otherwise. I did not come across this book until I was in Second year university. In that year, I decided to throw my whole subjective faith, traditional belief systems, and ideologies of this world to the wind. I adopted a complete objectively -philosophical, empirically-scientific view, where everything I studied was evaluated, compared with reality, and either accepted as realistic or rejected as psycho-babble. I wanted to formulate my own opinion and views, and not simply adopt someone else's ideas blindly. I took courses in biblical-criticism, Ingmar Bergman's existential films on religion, science, economics, accounting, history or medicine, history of christianity, immunology, biochemistry, molecular biology, computer science...and the like. This books documentary of many diverse views of american's search for meaning-from all walks of life- has brought me to an understanding that we are really not so different after all; that we are all human, we all need security, love, friends, hopes and dreams to help us cope with life's ups and downs. We all have our opinions of how we ought to find meaning in life, and we ought to respect each others resonable views. We all have our fears, ideologies, biases, and affirmations in life. And how we come to a balanced understanding and application of all that is around us, will play a crucial role in how and what we find meaningful in life.

Selected Poetry
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (September, 1998)
Authors: Gerard Manley Hopkins, John Maynard Hopkins, and Catherine Phillips
Average review score:

the greatest poetry ever written
Gerard Manley Hopkins is the greatest English poet to ever put pen to paper, bar none. Yes, even better than Shakespeare. Every student of English lit should read Hopkins. Hopkins writes from a profound love and awe of God and the beauty of His creations, but also from a deep despair resulting from chronic depression. His mastery of classical English combined with his magic use of sounds and word inventions is sheer genius. Read him.
